Music from Mill Hollow - book and CD
"Close your eyes as you listen to some of these gorgeous fiddle tunes played by Randy Miller and you could be at a fireside traditional music session in Ireland in bygone days. The music is honest and soulful and executed with skill and panache. Bravo Randy, and thank you for sharing your sweet music with us!" -Séamus McGuire, fiddler, Co. Donegal, Ireland
"Music From Mill Hollow brings Miller’s original pieces to life through a masterful mixture of fiddle, piano, and accordion. Each track travels between lively reels and jigs to wistful waltzes and soul-stirring airs, showcasing many of the diverse influences that have forged Miller’s personal tone. It is a testament to the ability of music to endure, and the boundless creation that springs forth from a lifelong devotion to one’s craft... With his album and book, Miller invites us to join him on a melodic journey, traversing the landscapes of New Hampshire and immersing ourselves in the magic of his original fiddle tunes." -Nathan Bagster, The Keene Sentinel
In 1973 I moved to the beautiful hamlet of Mill Hollow in the hill country of southwestern New Hampshire. This corner of the world became my home and also my inspiration. I’d been in love with traditional tunes since I first discovered and learned to play them in my twenties. It seemed a natural next step to try my hand at writing a few – my first one in 1974 and the most recent one in 2022 - 43 tunes in all.
The book contains sheet music with chords for all 43 tunes, personal notes on the tunes and the illustrations and vintage photos taken at New England sessions and dances going back to the 1970s. I illustrated the book with selections of my original woodblock engravings, telling my life story through my own music and art.
The companion CD album includes all 43 tunes in 38 tracks – reels, jigs, waltzes, hornpipes, polkas, an air and a barndance. The tracks are all short, just a few times through the tune, played on fiddle, piano and accordion while trying out some creative ideas with the melodies and the accompaniments.
"As anyone who has played and listened to music knows, freedom is a big, meaningful word in the tradition. Randy Miller in this collection has captured the essential meaning of a living tradition. In a way, has breathed Old Life into New Music. I'm going to let you in on a little secret: Randy has cracked the mystery of time-travel!" -Martin Donohoe, button accordion, Cavan, Ireland
